Salıncaklar, dondurmalar ve hani o ilk yakınlaşmalar... 2010'un en iyisini seçerken Beach House'un çocukluğa dair göndermelerle dolu görselleri ve sanki çocuklukta kalan arka oda müziği adını bu yıla ve yıllara yazdırmak için yeterliydi. İkilinin iki yakın arkadaşmışcasına birbirlerini koruma altına almaları bana çok sevdiğim Murathan Mungan'ın 50 yıldır çocukluğuma çocuğum gibi bakıyorum sözünü anımsatıyor (biliyorsunuz onun ne oğlu ne de kızı var)
Bir diğer Peter Pan ise ilahi yalnızlığı seçen ve büyüme sancılarını tek ve tek başına yaşayan Owen Pallett. Owen'ı koruma altına alansa sevgili yerine koyduğu dinleyicileri... Heartland adını taşıyan albümünde Pallett koşuyor, yoruluyor, utanıyor, cinselliğe yaklaştığını sanıyor, bir rolü öteki bir rol için terkediyor ve aslında tüm bu rollere -tüm yalnızlarda olduğu gibi- kendisini birisine sevdirmek için yapıyor. Biliyor ya da bilmiyor, bunlar ona çok yakışıyor.
Üç numaram ise ritm öfkesi ile ev arkadaşım FD'yi hatırlatan These New Puritans. Onlar da arkadaşım gibi yalnız ve yalnızca hedefine odaklı, gerekmediği halde savaşan ve nihayet aşka ulaşan ama stilinden de ödün vermeyen bir ruh halini sahipleniyor

Indie müzisyenlerden ziyade bir sanat akımı gibi hareket eden İngiliz These New Puritans, 2 yıl evvel çıkardığı debut Beat Pyramid ile çarpıcı bir sound ve entelektüel lirikler ile dinleyici için demir leblebi bir iş çıkarmıştı. İki senenin ardından gelen Hidden ise ilkinin bile tuhaflını gölgede bırakıyor. TNPS bu kez savaş baltalarını alenen çıkarmış. 7 dakikalık ilk single We Want War’da bu yönelim tavan yapmış durumda. Massive Attack’in Mezzanine’in anımsatan introsu ile şarkı etkili bir silaha dönüşüyor. İşbu tekinsiz müzikte bile işlerine hâkim duruşuyla haddinden fazla bir serinkanlılık sergiliyorlar. Öyle ki NME’nin her yıl yaptığı cool listesinde Barnett’in üst sıralarda kendisine yer edineceğine kesin gözüyle bakılabilir.

Yaydıkları füzyondan fazlasıyla emin oldukları Hidden hip-hop ile rock’ın evliliğine en güzel örneklerinden. The Fall ve Wu Tang Clan’i aynı derece sahiplenmeleri de bu yüzden. Three Thousand ya da Hologram gibi parçalardaki vokal tekniği ise en çok Kate Bush’u anımsatıyor. Popüler müzik standartlarında Melodi ile vokalin bir arada gitme zorunluluğu bu albümde işlemiyor. Hepsi birer Indie marşı olabilecek seviyede güçlü şarkılarını marketing stratejisine kurban etmemeleri de işlerine olan hakimiyet ve inançlarından kaynaklanıyor. Albüm sürprizli yanını hemen her şarkıda gösteriyor. Attack Music, Fire-Power, Orion… Çarkı çevirdiğinizde başyapıtın parçaları denk geliyor. 2. kaydıyla onları sene sonu listelerinde ilk 10’da görmek kimseyi şaşırtmasın. Hatta İngilizler’in ilk Mercury adayı da çıktı....

Indie müzisyenlerden ziyade bir sanat akımı gibi hareket eden İngiliz These New Puritans, 2 yıl evvel çıkardığı debut Beat Pyramid ile çarpıcı bir sound ve entelektüel lirikler ile dinleyici için demir leblebi bir iş çıkarmıştı. İki senenin ardından gelen Hidden ise ilkinin bile tuhaflını gölgede bırakıyor. TNPS bu kez savaş baltalarını alenen çıkarmış. 7 dakikalık ilk single We Want War’da bu yönelim tavan yapmış durumda. Massive Attack’in Mezzanine’in anımsatan introsu ile şarkı etkili bir silaha dönüşüyor. İşbu tekinsiz müzikte bile işlerine hâkim duruşuyla haddinden fazla bir serinkanlılık sergiliyorlar. Öyle ki NME’nin her yıl yaptığı cool listesinde Barnett’in üst sıralarda kendisine yer edineceğine kesin gözüyle bakılabilir.

Yaydıkları füzyondan fazlasıyla emin oldukları Hidden hip-hop ile rock’ın evliliğine en güzel örneklerinden. The Fall ve Wu Tang Clan’i aynı derece sahiplenmeleri de bu yüzden. Three Thousand ya da Hologram gibi parçalardaki vokal tekniği ise en çok Kate Bush’u anımsatıyor. Popüler müzik standartlarında Melodi ile vokalin bir arada gitme zorunluluğu bu albümde işlemiyor. Unutulmaz ‘başını ve kollarını yere sarkıt’ pozunun yaratıcıları, birbirini tamamlayan iki parça gibi, kusursuz bir bütün sunuyor.
‘New Rave’ adı verilen bilgisayar müziği ile klasik anlamda dans müziğinin çarpışması, Crystal Castles ile en ilkel ve tabii en temel formu buluyor. Klaxons gibi gruplar kendi heyecanlarında boğulurken; Crystal Castles üslubunu bozmayıp bu yeni akımın da üzerine çıkacak bir gerçeklik yarabilmeyi başarıyor. Zaten ‘CrimeWave’ gibi şarkılar, indie gençlerin yalnızca kollarını ve başlarını değil, tüm bildiklerini yere çelecek kadar etkili şarkılardı. Grubun yine kendi ismini taşıyan ikinci albümleri, ilk albümdeki sarsıcılığı deneyimin şaşırtıcılığına bırakmış. Albümü açan ‘Fainting Spells’, klasik Alice Glass vokallerini taşısa da, resimde arka planın önemi gibi [şaka gibi], şarkıda geriden gelen sesler, ipleri birbirine bağlayan bir unsur olarak şarkının anlamını tamamlamış. Peşisıra çalan ‘Celestica’ ile dream pop’a göz kırparak kariyerlerinin en açık şarkısını yapan grup, yer altı köklerini belli eden ‘Doe Deer’le ise Almanların karanlık dans müziğine bulanan çiğ bir punk eseri yaratmış. Countrey Love, 90’lı yılların alternatif ortamında bir tür cadı olarak konumlanmış; her cadı gibi, büyünün etkisi geçene kadar, emrine insan biriktirmeyi başarmıştı. Biliyoruz ki, Love önüne gelen şansları geri çevirmekte oldukça başarılı. Ama ilk defa tüm bu oluşturduğu anti kariyerini kazanca dönüştürmeyi seçmiş ya da en azından bunun için uğraşmış.
Albümle aynı adı taşıyan, manifesto niteliğinde Nobody's Daughter Love’ın keskinlik damarını yüzlere çarpıyor. Larrikin Love grubundan transfer gitarist Mirco Larkin, introsuyla revize edilmiş Hole müziğinin gelecek vaat ettiğini ilk anda belli ediyor. Single Skinny Little Bitch’e, Riot Grrll akımının devamı, Samantha tarzı parçalarsa külkedisi masallarına olan inancını sürdüğünü kanıtlıyor. İlk kez grunge baladlara bu denli yüklenen Love, Billy Corgan etkisini bünyesinde yaşatıyor. Love albümle skinny deriler giymiş ve kafası iyi bir Marianne Faithfull portresi çiziyor.

Who’s the most influential gay person in your life?
Whether I knew it or not, or found out later, a lot of the music that I grew up on tended to be made by gay men. A lot of my heroes were and are gay men.

Androgyny in your style and song lyrics back in the Hot Fuss days had blogs buzzing that you might be gay. Did having to field that question ever get annoying?
No, because I grew up obsessed with Morrissey, so a strange part of me was very flattered by it all. If that was always hovering around, it felt like I was doing something right. It was fun for a while.

Have you had any contact with Rufus Wainwright since he wrote the song Tulsa about your first meeting in Oklahoma?
I ran into Rufus in Scotland, where we were playing a gig called T in the Park. He was cruising around where all the bands are, and we had a laugh about it. I was very flattered.

Isn’t it only fair that you write a song about him now?

Yeni bir Tindersticks albümü haberiyle heyecanlananlarımızın sayısı giderek azalsa da, on yıl öncesi için konuştuğumuzda, böylesi bir haber, her müzikseveri dikkate zorlayacak kadar önemliydi. Bir çağı kapatmanın yorgunluğuna denk düşen Tindersticks, döneminin baskın müzikal karakterlerinden biri olarak, ortak bir drama yaratıyordu. Tindersticks’in yüzü Stuart Staples; Ian Curtis ve Leonard Cohen evliliğinden miras sesi ile kasvet ve melankoliye dair bir geleneğin devamını temsil ediyordu. Müzik basınının da tebrik etmekte gecikmeyeceği bu başarı, zaman içerisinde kendi kurallarını oluşturarak normalleşti. Tindersticks, çıkış noktasındaki gerekliliğini kanıtlamak için gereken çabayı belirgin sınırlar çizerek harcadı.
Bugüne kadar, konser kayıtları ve film müziklerini saymazsak, 7 albümü geride bırakan ekip, Falling Down A Mountain adlı yeni albümleriyle kendini sağlama almayı sürdürüyor. Ekip müziklerinden gerilimi atıp iyiden iyiye salon müziğine yaklaşmış ve ortaya en rahat dinlenen albümleri çıkmış. Albüme adını veren ilk parça, ısrarlı caz denemeleriyle The Doors’u anımsatıyor ve ani bir yabancılaşma hissi üzerinize çöküyor. Fakat merak etmeyin, narkoz gibi uyuşturan ‘Keep You Beautiful’u da geçince, ilk iki adımdan sonra, bilindik topraklarda yürümenin güvenilirliği geri geliyor ve albümün kalanı genel geçer Tindersticks kıvamını buluyor. Kıvam demişken; ‘Harmony Around My Table’ın sunduğu mutluluk ya da western mahsulü ‘She Rode Me Dawn’, ilk dinleyişte bir adım öne çıkıyor. Kıstas enstrümantal olunca, ‘Hubbard Hills’ ve ‘Piano Music’in hakkını teslim etmek gerekiyor. Albümün en Tindersticks parçası ‘Factory Girls’, Staples’ın iç çekişlerini karşılıyor. Radyo Eksen’den başka kimseyi ikna edememiş gözüken ilk single ‘Black Smoke’ ise, kendini tekrarın olumsuz sonuçlarından biri olarak kolaylıkla geride bırakılıyor.
20 yıla yaklaşan kariyerlerinde Tindersticks özenli çalışmalarına bir yenisini ekliyor ama kendisine yeni hayranlar katamıyor. 90’lı yılların melankolisi 2000’lerin hızına pek uymuyor. Bu hız problemine ayak uyduramayan ekip, eski bir dost gibi, anılardan bahsedip duruyor. Her gün görmek isteyeceğiniz türden bir dost değil ama sokağı döndüğünüzde, karşınıza çıkan bu dostu selamsız uğurlamıyorsunuz. Hele ki böylesi şık ve saygılı dostlar giderek azalırken…

Mevcut müzik kalıplarının kendisinde alerji yaptığını söyleyen solist Jack Barnett günümüzün en ayrıksı müziğini yapanlardan. Her şeyin başına 'anti' getirmeye meraklı Barnett müziğini de bu dik başlılıkla oluşturuyor. Melodi diziliminde alakasız sesleri ardı ardına kullanarak bir tür anti kompozisyon oluşturuyor ve bu çarpıklıktan yeni bir müzikalite üretiyor.

Indie müzisyenlerden ziyade bir sanat akımı gibi hareket eden İngiliz These New Puritans, 2 yıl evvel çıkardığı debut Beat Pyramid ile çarpıcı bir sound ve entelektüel lirikler ile dinleyici için demir leblebi bir iş çıkarmıştı. İki senenin ardından gelen Hidden ise ilkinin bile tuhaflını gölgede bırakıyor. TNPS bu kez savaş baltalarını alenen çıkarmış. 7 dakikalık ilk single We Want War’da bu yönelim tavan yapmış durumda. Massive Attack’in Mezzanine’in anımsatan introsu ile şarkı etkili bir silaha dönüşüyor. İşbu tekinsiz müzikte bile işlerine hâkim duruşuyla haddinden fazla bir serinkanlılık sergiliyorlar. Öyle ki NME’nin her yıl yaptığı cool listesinde Barnett’in üst sıralarda kendisine yer edineceğine kesin gözüyle bakılabilir.

Yaydıkları füzyondan fazlasıyla emin oldukları Hidden hip-hop ile rock’ın evliliğine en güzel örneklerinden. The Fall ve Wu Tang Clan’i aynı derece sahiplenmeleri de bu yüzden. Three Thousand ya da Hologram gibi parçalardaki vokal tekniği ise en çok Kate Bush’u anımsatıyor. Popüler müzik standartlarında Melodi ile vokalin bir arada gitme zorunluluğu bu albümde işlemiyor. Kanada’da ilk çıkan albümlere verilen Polaris Music Prize’ın ilk sahibi tek kişilik orkestra Owen Pallett yeni çıkan Heartland adlı albüme kadar Final Fantasy ismiyle idare ediyordu. Kendi albümleri dışında Arcade Fire’dan Pet Shop Boys’a, Grizzly Bear’den Mika’ya kadar birçok müzisyenin albümlerinde yaylılardan sorumlu olması bir yana orkestrasyondaki zarafetin de baş mimarıydı. İlk iki albümde denediği lirik performans ile Laurie Anderson’a özenen, benzer vokal tekniği ile müzik arasındaki lirik dengeyi yakalamaya çalışan Pallett üzerine sinen indie pop kemancısı rolü altında belirli melodileri tekrarlama zorunluluğu içerisindeydi. 2000’ler, kimi gruplar için gösteriş, meydan okuma, üstüne de bol hit çıkarmaysa Beach House’un müziği için zamansız tanımı hiç de fena olmaz. Geçtiğimiz on yılın ortasında çıkan Baltimore’lu ikili bir kilise orgu ve ruhtan inşa edilmiş vokal ile melankoliye yeni kanallar açarak yoğun bir drama armağan etmişlerdi. Nihayetinde müzikleri heyecan duygusundan ziyade, ehemmiyet ile besleniyordu. Yaptıkları yalın ve rafine müzik, tamamen duygulara yönelikti, ne dinleyicileri şaşırtmaya da yeltendiler ne de illüzyona. Etrafta oldukça samimi bir müzik vardı. Yeterince gönül çelici iki albümden sonra yeni Beach House albümünde mevcut harmoni devam edecek, drama benzer kalacaktı. Fakat Teen Dream ilk ikinin izlerinden yolu tamamlamaktansa yeni bir seyahati düşlüyor. Nostaljik yapı yerine bu kez olmadıkları kadar şenler. Tabii Beach House ne kadar şen olabilirse. Değişimdeki en büyük pay ise şüphesiz solist Victoria Legrand’a ait. Nicovari kederli vokali yerini Cat Power’ı anımsatan yumuşak gospel bir hüzne bırakıyor. Depresyon arifesinde kayıtlar yaparken bu kez post-depresyon sonrası atmosferdeler. Yeni bir Gila ya da You Came To Me bekleyenler umduğunu bulamayacak ama sabredip kendilerini gruba telsem edecekleri yine özel kayıtlar bekliyor. Albümde, geçen sene single olarak yayınlanan ve en sevilen Beach House şarkılarından olan Used To Be, ilk single Norway ya da Lover Of Mine gibi şarkılar parıltının ilk adresleri. Yine de tüm bu farklı sound, Teen Dream’in 2010’un ilk başyapıtlarından birisi olmasını engellemiyor.

White Chalk'ta beyaz tebeşirden kara tahtaya değdirdiği her bıçak darbesi en bilge ve çıplak PJ Harvey'di kuşkusuz. Albüm kapağında kat kat giyinse de -genelde çıplak hatta memeleri dışarda göstermeyi alışkanlık edinmiş birisi olmasına rağmen- çıplaklığı ve akıttığı kanı kapatamamıştı. Eskiye gittiğimizde, köyün yabangülü 90'larda başladığı müzik hayatında eş zamanda çıkan çoğu kadın şarkıyazarına karşın kendi dil ve duygusunu hayli sert biçimde göstermişti. O ana kadar biriktirdiği ve bildiği de içgüdüleriydi. Orta çağdan bu yana korkulan orospu ve cadıların şehre sokulmaması PJ için de bozulmuyordu. Unutulansa dağın gerisinde kalmayı tercih eden de oydu. Dry. Dağın ardında tüm yabaniliğiyle ben seni yalarken sen beni kuru bırakıyorsun lafı da sağ eller havaya, pırlantalar buraya, girmesinler arayadan çok biraz cesaretten biraz kasaba dürüstlüğünden ileri geliyordu. Tricky'lerle hip-hopa bulaşınca birbirinden tuhaf işler de peşi sıra geldi. Is This Desire. Avangard defilelerde dahi müziği fon olmuştu. Man-Size PJ yavaştan kabuk değiştiriyordu ve sonunda şehre inme kararı verince canavar düdüğü yerini maskülen bir feminenliğe bıraktı. New York'a kendini bıraktığında şehre ve denize bırakacağı nice hikayesi vardı artık. Evvela üst başından başladı, giysi hatları daraldı, makyaj inceldi, müziği daha pop ve dinlenir hale geldi. Ve PJ tarihindeki en büyük alkışı aldı. Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea. Derken kimsenin anlamak isteyemeyeceği başka bir ara albümle geldi. Şehir hayatı bunalımını, gerçirdiği diğer bir krizden farksız olan Uh Uh Her'le geldi. Şükür ki etrafındakilerden kendisini ayrıştırmayı yine bildi. En kaba haliyle Bjork gibi gibi matruşkalarını etrafa saçmadı. Aynı dönemde çıkan ve var oldukları süre boyunca kim daha iyi yarışına taraf olan iki şarkıcı da tüm farklılıklarına rağmen iki yol göstericiydi. Biri etrafını tüm renkleriyle kuşatıp sizdeki renkleri bile eksik gösterebilcek güç ve enerjiye sahipken diğeri sadece köşede beklemekle yetindi, gözünü çevirdiğin an kaybolanlardan. Hayelet piyanosuyla gelen White Chalk ise PJ'in kendine yaktığı ağıtların birleşimi, kendisine sapladığı mızrakları çıkarması, doğada bu sefer şehirden sonraki dönüş gibi yeniden tanımlaması, ne bileyim soyutlaması, arınması falan en yalın ve çıplak haliydi. A Woman A Man Walk By adlı son PJ kaydında savaştığı John Paris ile sert bir albümde birleşiyor

Super Furry Animals vokalisti Gruff Rhyss geçen yıl Neon Neon projesi ile hayatının son nefesine dek uyuşturucu harcamasını çıkarmış üstüne Mercury adaylığı ve brit gençlerin takdir ve sevgisini kazanarak bir anda flash isim haline gelmişti. Rhyss Neon Neon'dan daha nemalanabilecekken beklenmedik bir anda grubu Super Furry Animals'la yeni bir albüm kaydetmesi ise hayli erken bir karar olmuş. Nasıl mı? Yazının devamında hep beraber anlamaya çalışalım. Rings Around The World sonrası Rings Around The World öncesi işlerin izini süren ekip yaramazlığı ile takibi zor bir dönemece girerek azılı fanlar dışında kimseyi memnun edememişti. Geometriyi zevkli hale getirmeye çalışın lafı ne kadar pratik bir çözümse yeni SFA da o kadar zevkliydi. En yeni SFA albümü Dark Days/Light Years ise ekibin elindeki son şansı nasıl değrlendiremediklerine kanıt olmuş. Girişteki Crazy Naked Girls ismi kadar korkunç, tüm o 70'lerde kalması gereken acid kafalı, kızların memeler dışarda, wah wah gitarlı, kopartan müziğinin halüsinasyonu ile SFA müthiş ironisi ile dalgasını geçse de diskografisindeki en zorlama ironi yaftasının da sahibi oluyor. According to a press release from the band the album will be based around riffs and grooves they have been playing for the last few years and will feature only one slow song which isn't slow at all. The statement goes on to claim that the saxophone and lap steel guitar have been consigned to the banned instrument directive of the SFA board with drummer Dafydd Ieuan apparently developing a phobia of the latter
